Despite a strong 2024 season that saw the Kansas City Chiefs clinch their ninth consecutive AFC West title, their campaign ended in disappointment with a 40-22 Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The defeat not only crushed their hopes for a historic three-peat but also raised concerns about whether the Chiefs’ dominance is beginning to fade.

While Patrick Mahomes remains the gold standard among NFL quarterbacks, some analysts are questioning whether Kansas City’s reign at the top is sustainable.

With offensive line struggles and tougher divisional competition, Fox Sports Radio host Colin Cowherd has predicted that 2025 could be the year the Chiefs’ streak comes to an end.

Cowherd raised concerns about Kansas City’s pass protection and how it could impact Mahomes’ ability to perform at his usual elite level.

“I think the Chiefs are going to struggle, and I don’t think they are going to win their division,” Cowherd stated. “I don’t think, in this draft class, there’s a starting left tackle good enough, in their division, to block Maxx Crosby or Khalil Mack…

“The three or four teams I like in the league all have great O-lines, all of them… They are not going 10-1 in close games next year.”

Kansas City’s offensive line issues were evident throughout 2024, with Mahomes facing more pressure than in previous years.

While the team’s defense managed to keep them in games, the lack of protection up front forced Mahomes to extend plays and take unnecessary hits. If these issues persist, the Chiefs could be vulnerable in an increasingly competitive AFC West.

Former NFL scout John Middlekauff acknowledged the offensive struggles but believes that Kansas City’s defense remains a strong foundation for success.

“Their offensive line was putrid this year on the edges, and they were basically a 16-1 team – they threw the last game of the season,” Middlekauff pointed out. “Most importantly, their defense is going to be good.

“Part of the reason they were winning all of those games is because they can win 19-17. They weren’t allowing many points, and that’s not going to change.”

While Middlekauff is optimistic about the Chiefs’ defense, he warned that divisional rivals like the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers are improving. If these teams close the gap, the race for the AFC West title could be more competitive than it has been in years.

Nick Wright Dismisses Doubts About Mahomes
While Cowherd and Middlekauff expressed concerns, Nick Wright strongly disagreed, labeling Cowherd’s yearly doubts about the Chiefs as a predictable mistake.

“You pick a new team to win the AFC West and then midway through the year you’re like, ‘Yea, I probably shouldn’t have done that.’ … I just got to say, the rest of your bracket feels a lot like we are respecting the teams that were really good last year, except for, of course, the Chiefs,” Wright responded.
